Don Lee Cousino

October 11, 1932 ~ October 13, 2011 (age 79) 79 Years Old


Don Lee Cousino, 79, of Curtice, Ohio passed away suddenly, on Thursday, October 13, 2011.  He was born, October 11, 1932 in Oregon, Ohio to Leo and Mary (Reihle) Cousino.  Don graduated from Clay High School in 1950.  He served as an Army sergeant in the Korean War from 1952 to 1954. He drove for several trucking companies before retiring from Lucas County Engineers in 1997.  Everything he did he gave 110% from weightlifting, ping pong, soft ball, raising field trial beagles, fishing and hunting.

He was very active in coaching baseball, football, basketball and wrestling. His home garage was open daily to anyone interested in working out with weights. The only rule that he had was “no goofing around.” Over the last 46 years he has had hundreds of athletes from many area schools train in the garage. Many who have gone on to play for college and professional teams. Don was inducted into the Toledo Weight Lifting Hall of Fame in 1991, and won several weight lifting titles from the fifties to the late sixties, including “Mr. Toledo.” Don was a member of Christ Dunberger Post #537 and Local V.F.W. Post #9816.

Don is survived by his loving wife and high school sweetheart of 57 years his special angel, Jill (Rideout) Cousino; sons, Jeffery “Jethro” (Donna), Doug (Sue), Greg “Tiny” (Angie) Cousino; daughter, Bonnie (Steve) Petroff; loving grandchildren, Joshua, Jessica Cousino, Aaron Cousino, Justin (Rachel), Darcee, Corey (Elizabeth), Alex Cousino, Austin Petroff, Micheal, Zach and Coty Dufendock as well as four great-grandchildren, Aaleina, Ava, Clara, Lilliana. Also surviving are his sister, Pat (Earl) Weidner, sisters-in-laws, Dorothy (Bill) Leonhardt and Carol (Wayne) Allen; 12 nieces and nephews and his loyal pet companion, Moe. He will also be missed by Joe Slagle and Pete Bolanis, very dear friends that were with him every step of the way, and many many more dear friends. Don was preceded in death by his daughter, Julie Kroeger; parents, Leo and Mary Cousino and father and mother-in-law, Ray and Dorothy Rideout.
The family would like to thank the doctors and staff of the Cleveland Clinic for there professional and loving care.

Friends may visit Freck Funeral Chapel, 1155 S. Wynn Rd. in Oregon, on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 from 2 to 8 p.m. where Legion services will be held at 7 p.m.  Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 19th at 11 a.m. at the funeral home.  Burial will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to his family.
