Melvin Skadsheim Obituary

Melvin Arthur Skadsheim, age 88, passed away suddenly, but peacefully, at home with his wife by his side on Wednesday, April 3, 2024. Melvin was born to Melvin Norman and Vera Mae (Stewart) on March 7, 1936 in Tacoma, Washington. After high school, he went on to serve our country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. As a conscientious objector Mel was offered the opportunity to be a part of a prestigious organization called the White Coats. Mel served our country defending troops and civilians against biological weapons. The studies he was a part of have gone on through history to help future generations in all sorts of manners. After his time in the service, he completed his Bachelor of Science in Business from Washington Adventist University. Mel worked his entire career in insurance, the last 20 years at the General Conference of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, working in the Risk Management Underwriting and Marketing Division where he traveled the world extensively in Asia, Australia, Europe, and many more countries applying his craft when/where needed. Mel was an avid collector of scales, clocks, coins, stamps, and miscellaneous items from his world travels. His family has always enjoyed, from the time he was little to adulthood, watching him tinker and fix almost anything! His ability to train his dogs was always the envy of anyone lucky enough to witness his dogs perform. When his children were growing up Mel and Brandon really bonded as they worked to restore an old 1986 Nissan Sentra. Carol was not as thrilled when he decided to teach Crista to drive at the age of 11 on the country roads of Idaho. Mel and Carol's favorite way to relax and regroup was their regular trips to Maui, Hawaii. They would highly suggest it as a key point in a long and loving marriage. After retiring and moving to Toledo, Ohio to be closer to family, Mel has really enjoyed joining his new church family at Toledo First, especially the relationship with Pastor Kojo. One of his greatest happy times was his weekly Sunday night dinners with his family and especially his cherished Grandchildren.

He is survived by his beloved wife and soul mate of 42 years Carol (Bailey) Skadsheim; his children Crista (Kevin) Driscoll
and Brandon (Crystal) Skadsheim; Grandchildren Bailey, Hunter, Logan, Brianna, Reagan, and Blake; siblings Lila Bloomquist and Carol Byrkit; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Mel requested that the services be private, but the family would love to hear any special stories that you would like to share. Arrangements were entrusted to Freck Funeral Chapel.
