Barney J. Gladieux went to be with Our Lord and Savior on May 27th 2025. Barney was born on March 5th 1932 in Oregon, Ohio to Henry and Anna (Fleitz) Gladieux. During his high school years, Barney excelled in football while playing for Clay High School; he was the leading scorer in the State of Ohio his senior year. Upon graduating in 1952, Barney was recruited by Michigan, Ohio State, and other college programs. He was inducted into the Clay High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
Barney worked at the Toledo Edison until retiring in 1991, he was also a lifelong farmer. Barney enjoyed life, hunting, fishing on Lake Erie, camping at Wild Wings Campground, casino trips, playing his guitar in “The Lazy Bed Band”, and family cruises, being the oldest cruiser on the ship in March 2025. Barney was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 1337 Newcomerstown, Ohio and The Fraternal Order of Eagles #386 Cambridge, Ohio.
Barney married Patricia Purdy on November 29, 1952; they later divorced. After 29 years of dating, he married Carole Nelson on August 19, 2011. She preceded him in death on November 24, 2019.
He is survived by his children, Michael (Linda), and Hank (Jodi) of Freeport, Ohio, Mary Ann (Marvin) Rhoads of Hillsboro, Ohio, Patty (Hope) McNeal-Harp, and Brian Nelson of Toledo, Ohio. He is also survived by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and special friends Jim and Chris Starcher. Barney was preceded in death by his parents, former wife Patricia, wife Carole, sons John and Barney Jr., brothers Elmer (Al), Glenn, Gerald, Chuck, and Roy, and sisters Elizabeth Metzger, Beatrice Smith, and Sarah Keller.
A visitation will be held on Monday, June 2, 2025, at Freck Funeral Chapel, 1155 S Wynn Rd in Oregon, Ohio, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. A funeral service will begin at 1 p.m. Burial will follow in St. Ignatius Cemetery.
