Gerald L Hilbert 07.24.42-01.20.24
Gerald (Jerry as known by many), was born to Florence and Joseph Hilbert on July 24, 1942. He was the youngest of two children. Jerry graduated from Waite HS, and worked in his father’s pattern shop until leaving to work for Norfolk Southern Railroad until his retirement. In 1969 he married the love of his life, Mary Margaret Michalak and the two were together until her death in March of 2010.
Throughout his life, Jerry had many interests and hobbies. He was an accomplished sailor and spent many years sailing out of Catawba Moorings in his sailboat the “Free Spirit” with several of his cousins, friends, nieces and nephews over the years. He loved sailing and had many fascinating stories to tell from this time in his life. Until recently, Jerry loved to visit Put-in-Bay and take in a show from his favorite local musician, Mike “Mad Dog” Adams.
Another major part of Jerry’s life was his involvement in the Amateur Radio community. His call letters were “KA8CYN” for decades. He enjoyed connecting with other operators from around the country and formed lasting friendships through this beloved hobby.
Jerry was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish in Bono, OH and helped faithfully at the Bonofest for years. He was a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus Council #04237 and a Third Degree Knight, achieving Honorary Life member status.
Jerry is survived by cousins: Jim (Joyce) Campey, Judy (Rich) Emmons, and Denny (Roseann) Hilbert. He is also survived by sister-in-law Joanne Karl and many nieces and nephews. Along with his wife and parents, Jerry was preceded in death by his brother Joseph Hilbert Jr.
A special thank you also to the staff at Mercy St. Charles Hospital, Regency LTACC, Genoa Care Center, and Orchard Villa.
In lieu of flowers, Jerry would like those closest to him to make contributions to the following organizations: St. Jude Hospital, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Bono, and St. Boniface School Oak Harbor, OH.
