James "Jim" Blachowski

James J. “Jim” Blachowski was born May 3, 1960, in Toledo, Ohio, to Thomas and Elsie Blachowski. Jim lived a life centered around family, hard work, helping others, and being there for the people he loved.

A graduate of DeVilbiss High School, Jim was a talented carpenter and craftsman. He began his career working as a carpenter for WTOL 11 before becoming a union carpenter, specializing in the work he enjoyed most—finish carpentry. Jim had an incredible ability to build, repair, and figure out just about anything. His talents also extended to electronics, and he spent approximately 20 years working with alarm systems. Later, Jim drove truck before eventually retiring.

While Jim took great pride in his work, his greatest pride was always his family. He shared 43 years of marriage with Jean, the love of his life, and together they raised three children, Jamie, Tommy, and Amy, whom he could not have been more proud of. Their family also includes their bonus daughter, Candi (Louis) Morales, who first came into their lives through foster care and became a daughter in every way that mattered.

Jim and Jean opened their home and hearts as foster parents to an incredible 55 children throughout the years. For Jim, family was about far more than biology. It was about opening your door, making room at the table, loving people, and being there when they needed you.

And Jim was always there.

He was the dad who didn't miss Dad's Day, sporting events, concerts, school activities, or the important moments in his children's or grandchildren’s lives. Whatever the event, his family could count on looking out and seeing Jim there. He showed his love not only through words, but through his time, his presence, and the countless things he did for the people he cared about.

Jim especially loved spending time with his family. Some of his favorite memories were made fishing with his children, nieces, and nephews, camping, and exploring the mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina. Family vacations were among his favorite times of the year because, for Jim, the best part of any adventure was simply having everyone together.

At home, Jim enjoyed gardening and took great pride in his yard. He loved playing guitar, woodworking, building things, and taking on projects. He was the person family and friends could turn to when something needed to be built or fixed—or when they simply needed an extra set of hands.

Becoming a grandfather brought Jim tremendous joy. He treasured his grandchildren and especially enjoyed helping them with projects, teaching them how to build and fix things, and passing along the skills he had learned throughout his life.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Elsie Blachowski.

Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 43 years, Jean Blachowski; his children, Jamie (Brian) Fisher-Mock, Tommy Blachowski, and Amy (Robert) Gottschalk; bonus daughter, Candi (Louis) Morales; and his cherished grandchildren, RJ Gottschalk, Avery Gottschalk, and Frankie Gottschalk. He also leaves behind his nieces, nephews, extended family, foster children, friends, and the many people whose lives were touched by his kindness and willingness to help.

Jim will be remembered as a devoted husband, proud father, loving foster and bonus dad, treasured grandfather, skilled craftsman, and a man who understood that some of the greatest expressions of love are simply being there, lending a hand, and showing up.

Jim built many things throughout his lifetime, but none were more important than the family, relationships, and memories he built along the way.

His hands built many things. His heart built a family.
