James F. Gardull, age 86, resident of Toledo, Ohio, passed away on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, at the University of Toledo Medical Center. He was born on February 9, 1940, in Toledo, to the late Frank and Betty (McCavitt) Gardull.

A 1958 graduate of Waite High School, he enjoyed running track and hurdles. James continued his education at the University of Toledo. There, he was a marathon runner. He carried that same dedication throughout his life in everything he did. In his younger years, he was an avid bowler and was on a bowling league.

James was a hard and dedicated worker no matter the job. He started working at 7 Up and furthered his career at Jeep, Life of Virginia Insurance, University of Toledo, and then at MCO (UTMC) for over 30 years.

He spent many years enjoying the outdoors, especially fishing, water skiing, and ice skating, at the family cottage on Evans Lake, Michigan. It was his favorite place to relax and make lasting memories. He also enjoyed hunting, woodworking, watching Ohio State football, playing cards, and dancing, especially ballroom, with his beloved wife.

A faithful member of St. Mark Lutheran Church, he devoted much of his time to serving his church family. He served as a deacon and usher, read scripture during services, participated on the church council, sang in the choir, and volunteered during the community dinners hosted by the church.

James especially looked forward to Christmas and took great joy in decorating for the holidays. More than anything, he was known for his caring and selfless nature. James was always willing to help others, often caring for members of his wife's family during times of illness. His kindness, patience, and understanding touched everyone who knew him.

Above all, James was a devoted husband and an awesome dad. His love for his family, faith, and his willingness to put others before himself will be remembered always. This isn’t goodbye, but we will see you again!

Those left to forever cherish his memory are his loving wife, Patricia (Ford) Gardull, whom he married on August 19, 1961; daughters, Diane (Gary) Gray and Karen Lewis; grand-pups, Harley and Emmy; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his brother, John Gardull.
