Jean Therese Schlageter passed away quietly Friday, February 5, 2016, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio. She was born in Toledo May 22, 1960, to James and Patricia Schlageter. Jean attended Sacred Heart Elementary and Waite High School. Her greatest loves were swimming, travelling and music. After suffering a spinal cord injury at the young age of 30, she didn’t give into pity, instead fought to make a difference in her community.
Jean spoke at high schools and visited many families to educate against domestic violence and child abuse. She was flown to California to speak and also nominated for the Jefferson Award for service to the community. Jean was proud of her east side roots and feared no one but was loved by many. She touched the lives of everyone she met.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents, James A. and Patricia A. Schlageter; sister, Jacqueline Marie Schlageter and niece, Ashlee E. Boening.
She is survived by her longtime companion, Kent Mantey; brother, James E. Schlageter; sisters, Julie Schlageter-Morris (Lamar) and Joanna (Rob) Zeiler; children, Jennifer Smith (John), Kristopher Schlageter (Rebecca) and Cortney (Chris) Boyd; grandchildren, Ian, Angel, Isaac, Kayden, Isabel, Owen, Emma and Evan.
The family will hold a memorial for Jean from 1-5 p.m., with the service to be held at 5 p.m. at the Freck Funeral Chapel, 1155 S. Wynn Road, Saturday, February 13.
