John Warner Gilbert

October 21, 1940 — February 10, 2022

John Warner Gilbert, 81, of Oak Harbor was surrounded with love as he went home to be with his Lord on Thursday, February 10, 2022.

John was born on October 21, 1940, in Walbridge, Ohio. The youngest of four children born to Dale and Dorothy (Cotterman) Gilbert. John grew up in Fremont, Ohio and received his GED while serving his country in the United States Army. A vast majority of his career was working as a sheet metal man at DeVilbiss for 24 years. John was a member of the United Auto Workers (UAW) and spent the remainder of his career as a millwright at Jeep, retiring in 2005. He had a wonderful knack of being able to solve problems and fix anything.

John married Janet Kathryn Perry on October 22, 1962, and she survives. Together they had three children, Jeffrey Gilbert, Kathryn (Craig) Oborn, and Michelle (William) Smith. They enjoyed countless vacations camping with family, riding motorcycles, and growing closer to Jesus. What they enjoyed most was the time they spent together with their beloved cats, Moocher and Sophie and their grandchildren, Dustin Twarek (Nicci King), Bethany (Alexander) Brikmanis, Chelsea (Brian) Wyss, and Zachary Smith (Amanda Lorenz) and great-grandchildren, Leo, Amelia, and Aryanna

He is survived by sister-in-law, Judith Perry; brother-in-law, David (Sharon) Perry, sister-in-law, Carol Perry, and many dear nieces and nephews. He was proceeded in death by his parents; son, Jeffrey Gilbert; siblings, Robert (Sandy) Gilbert, Lyle Gilbert, and Eleanor (James) Cockrell; mother and father-in law, Lawrence and Dorothea Perry, brothers-in-law, Ronald and Alan Perry, and sister-in-law, Norma Jean Perry.

Visitation will be held, Saturday February 19, 2022 at Freck Funeral Chapel 1155 S. Wynn Rd. Oregon, Ohio beginning at 10:00 a.m. with memorial service to follow at 12:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to Clay Township EMS or Stein Hospice.
