Larry L. Avery, age 75 of Oregon, went on to be with our Lord and Savior on Sunday, November 23, 2025, surrounded by family. Larry was born to Ernest Avery and Nancy (Byers) on July 17, 1950, in Toledo, Ohio. Growing up on the East Side, Larry graduated from Waite High School in 1969. While in high school, he was a member of Deca and started his working life at Hirzel Brothers Florist and Kmart. Larry went on to serve our country in the U.S. Marine Corps. He married his sweetheart, Evelyn (Sigler), on September 25, 1971. She joined him for an extended “honeymoon” while stationed in Oceanside, CA. When he returned home from service, Larry worked in the shipyards before beginning his career with Boilermakers Local 85, which he continued until his retirement in 2008. Larry also worked as a Realtor for 27 years.
To know Larry is to know his service was not only to country but to his FAITH, FAMILY, and COMMUNITY. Larry and Evelyn were active members of the Oregon Church of the Nazarene, where Larry served as Sunday School Superintendent and on the church board. They continued their service when the church expanded into Hope Community Church of the Nazarene in Oregon and the East Toledo Location. Larry was serving as a local Pastor at Genesis Village in Toledo and was currently studying to achieve full ordination in the Nazarene Church.
Larry loved being a husband, father, and grandfather. His greatest joys were attending performances, sporting events, parties, weddings, and anything that celebrated his family, including home projects and repairs.
Larry was hardworking and dedicated to community service. Whether it was donating blood, mowing lawns at Oakdale Park and the East Toledo Senior Center, or helping neighbors to develop housing, if Larry saw an opportunity to serve, he was there with a smile and a good pun to keep you on your toes. Larry was quick-witted and enjoyed a good laugh.
Larry is survived by his wife of 54 years Evelyn; children Nathan (Nicole) Avery, Holly (Timothy) Rugg, and Ryan (Renee’) Avery; grandchildren Brookelynn (John) Rodriguez, Averi (Cameron) DeWeese, Ryan Avery Jr., Adelyn Rugg, Blake Avery, Trinton Avery, Kathlynn Avery, Easton Avery, and Evan Avery; great-granddaughter Ensleigh Rodriguez; best friend Ken Chisholm, siblings Ernie Jr. (Cindy) Avery, Jim (Judy) Avery, Cathy (John) Lorton, Danny (Debbie) Avery, Steve ( Pam) Avery, and Donise Bickerstaff, sister in law Vickie Avery and many nieces, nephews and close friends. Larry was preceded in death by his parents Ernest Sr. and Audrey Avery and Nancy and Gene Saunders; siblings Sharon Thol, Cork Avery, David Avery; and his beloved canine companion, Eva, his sweet dog.
A visitation will be held on Friday, November 28, 2025, at Hope Community Church, 5650 Starr Ext. in Oregon, Ohio, from 2 until 8 p.m. A funeral service will he held at Hope Community Church on Saturday at 10 a.m., where family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Lake Township Cemetery. Following the graveside service, the family will host a luncheon back at Hope to watch the Ohio State/Michigan game.
