Marvin Traver

February 18, 1942 — May 23, 2025

Marvin Traver, of Toledo, Ohio, went to be with the Lord on Friday, May 23rd, 2025. Marv, an avid gardener, faithful servant of his church, a longtime member of his Saturday breakfast bunch, and a joyfully retired teacher, his most treasured time was that with his family. A fan of anything his grandchildren did, Marv could always be found on a sideline, at a school event, or simply visiting with his grandchildren.

Born on February 18, 1942 to Leger and Marie Traver, Marvin and his sister, Barbara, grew up in Toledo where he was a lifelong resident and true champion of the Eastside. As a member of St. Thomas Aquinas church, Marv and his wife Karen, faithfully served as members of the church community for the entirety of their marriage, including sending their children to the school. Living in close proximity to family, the Traver, Thomas, and Alford families meshed as one, giving their children an idyllic childhood that created strong bonds that last to this day. Marv was a regular volunteer at not only St. Thomas, but also at Helping Hands of St. Louis, Little Sisters of the Poor, and the Toledo Metroparks, further pouring into the community that he so loved. During the summer, Marv could most likely be found in his backyard, curating his prized flower garden.

A graduate of Central Catholic and The University of Toledo, Marv was also a strong supporter of Woodward High School, where he spent most of his teaching career. During Marv’s 35 year teaching career, he touched the lives of many students with his special gifts in speech and writing. Marv could, and did, talk to anyone about anything and found genuine interest in their lives. He made everyone feel special and always made a point to remember the happenings of everyone and to check back in on the next visit. Marv’s kindness was a true gift as a friend to all who met him.

Married to the love of his life, Karen, on October 23, 1965, the two of them shared almost 60 years of wedded love. Marv and Karen raised four children together, teaching them the importance of faith and family. Through annual trips to Pokagon and the childrens’ various activities, including scouts, Marv and Karen gave the children a love for the outdoors and showed them the importance of family time. Marv was a devoted husband who showed his love for Karen in the little things that let her know she was the most important person in his life.

Marv’s greatest legacy was that of his grandchildren and their education. The academic accomplishments of his grandchildren were shared with many and always part of his prayers of gratitude around the family table. Maizy, Ellie, Cole, Owen, Morgan, Claire, Anne, and Jordan were Papa’s pride and joy and anyone who knew Marv knew that as well. They all know how deeply they were loved by their Papa and how blessed they were to have his undying support.

Marvin is survived by his wife, Karen (Widmer) Traver, his children, Amy (Mark) Lepkowski, Matt (Julie) Traver, Pete (Kacie) Traver; grandchildren Maizy, Ellie, Cole, & Claire Lepkowski; Anne Traver; Owen, Morgan, & Jordan Traver; sister-in-law, Marsha Matthews and brother-in-law, Larry Widmer; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, son Andrew Traver, sister Barbara Thomas and brother-in-law Robert Thomas.
