Paul J. Raglow MD

June 3, 1933 — November 2, 2025

Dr. Paul John Raglow passed away peacefully and surrounded by family members on All Soul’s Day, November 2nd, 2025, at the age of 92. Paul was born in Cleveland OH on June 3rd, 1933 to William Hurst Raglow and Marion Carlin Raglow, the oldest boy of seven siblings and three half-siblings. He loved his large Irish Catholic family, and the many stories of their childhood shenanigans became family heirlooms, bringing raucous laughter no matter how many times they were told. Paul’s father William insisted his oldest son Paul attend college and become a doctor, which Paul did, notwithstanding some reluctance. Paul attended John Carroll University in Cleveland and medical school at the Stritch College of Medicine of Loyola University in Chicago. Paul met his future wife Elaine Cecilia Beirne while he was in medical school and she was studying to become a nurse. They married on September 12th, 1959, shortly after Paul graduated from medical school. After interning at Charity Hospital in Cleveland, Paul undertook residency in Radiology at St. Luke’s hospital in Cleveland. After residency, Paul accepted a position working with Dr. John Smythe in the Radiology Department at St. Charles Hospital in Oregon and settled his family in Walbridge, OH, splitting the distance between Paul’s family in Cleveland and Elaine’s in Chicago. In 1969, they built a house right next to St. Jerome Catholic Church in Walbridge, where they remain members to this day.

Paul became the Head of Radiology at St. Charles after Dr. Smythe’s unexpected passing and served over 30 years at St. Charles, including two terms as St. Charles Hospital Chief of Staff. He was respected and loved by the colleagues and staff at St. Charles and his Radiological Associates, Inc. practice. His retirement speech stands as an icon of clarity, honesty and succinctness. Here it is in its entirety: “I’ve been waiting for this day since third grade!”

Paul was an excellent and hard-working Radiologist, but his true love was family. Both Paul and Elaine came from large families, wanted the same and in short order had nine children of their own: Greg (Joyce), Sue Birchall (Bob), Paul (Patti), Steve (Carolyne), Pat (+Andrea), Bob, Dan (Rachel), Julie Osburn (Doug) and David (Angie). The children all attended both St. Jerome Elementary School and Cardinal Stritch High School, where Elaine served in school and sports activities, and field trips too numerous to mention. Paul enjoyed his brothers and sisters immensely and brought his own growing family to weekend visits and summer vacations with them and the dozens of cousins. Millions of happy memories made.

Paul loved his Cleveland sports teams, most especially the Browns, which sadly for all Browns fans never returned the favor. Paul was revered by his children, their spouses, children and grandchildren. His dry wit and sense of humor were treasured, certainly by his children—and sometimes even more by their peers.

Paul is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Elaine, and their nine children, 33 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, as well as his sisters Jane (Jerry) Widman and Kathy Raglow, and sisters-in-law Nancy, Teres and Wanda. He is preceded in death by parents William, Marion and stepmother Nora, and siblings Ann Kruchan (Ron), Bill, Mary Snyder (Ray), Jim, John (Marilyn), Dan, Nancy Lang (Tony). Also welcoming Paul to heaven will be his great-granddaughter Elaine Elizabeth and daughter-in-law Andrea.
