Richard Lawrence Nusbaum died on Sunday, February 8, 2026. He was born on July 21, 1935, on the family farm that was once owned by his great-grandparents, Nicholas and Walburga Nusbaum. He was the first of seven children born to Arnold and Rose [Lohner] Nusbaum. He graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1953.
He married Arlene Monk on June 23, 1956, and she preceded him in death on June 28, 1973. He married Betty Chio on August 30, 1974, and she preceded him in death on January 29, 2009. He married Carolyn Mahr on July 10, 2010, and she survives.
Richard worked 30 years as a bricklayer, Local 3, Toledo, retiring in 1987. He then spent 10 years at Oregon Wastewater Plant as an Operator, retiring in 1997.
Richard loved farming, hunting, fishing, and dancing. When he retired as a bricklayer, he also retired from farming.
He especially loved attending the Nusbaum Family Reunion and visiting with his cousins and their families.
He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Genoa, Ohio. In the past, Richard had been a volunteer firefighter for the Bay Township Fire Department, a Communion Distributor at the Genoa Care Center, a parish volunteer for the Genoa Food Pantry, and a parish volunteer for the annual community Thanksgiving dinner.
He was preceded in death by his first two wives, Arlene and Betty; parents, Arnold and Rose Nusbaum; son, Richard A. Nusbaum; brother, Edward Nusbaum; brother-in-law, John Webber, sister-in-law, Janet Nusbaum, and step-son, Daniel Chio.
Richard is survived by his wife, Carolyn; children, Brenda (Mark) Allison, Michael (Ginny) Nusbaum, and Karen Shaffer (Harry Allen); grandchildren, Cody Allison (Hannah Smith), Jordan Allison (Chelsie Miller), Macy (Kevin) Beier, Brittany (Jordan) Gerner, Ryan (Kristen) Nusbaum, Brandon Shaffer. and Chelsey (Austin) Sendelbach; great-grandchildren, Addison, Dominic, Elaina, Harper, Jack, Kyle, Sadie, and Shelby; step-children, Ruth Chio, Jack (Barbara) Chio, Michele (Tedd) Culver, Anita (Robert) Dagg, Jeffrey (Heidi) Mahr, Joseph (Melinda) Mahr, and John Mahr; step-grandchildren, Hope and Paige Baumgartner, Michelle Chio, James (Brittany) Culver, Andrew (Yuki) Culver, Amanda (Jamie) Dull, Jennifer George, Calla, Derek, and Isabelle Mahr (Brandon Garcia), Nathaniel, and Nicholas Mahr, and Nicole (Justin) Meyer; step-great-grandchildren,, Emmett, Gideon, Julia, Keiran, Piper, and Evelyn; siblings, Ann (Gary) Kahn, Charles (Linda) Nusbaum, James (Patricia) Nusbaum, Thomas Nusbaum, and Patricia Webber (Larry Parrish).
Visitation will be Friday, February 13, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Freck Funeral Chapel, 1155 S. Wynn Road, Oregon, OH 43616. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, February 14, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 204 Main Street, Genoa, Ohio. The family will greet friends one hour at the church before the start of Mass. Graveside services will be held after the Mass at Roose Cemetery, Oak Harbor, Ohio.
