Robert George Ferencz Sr., age 96 of Toledo, Ohio, passed away on June 17, 2026, at home. Robert was born in Budapest, Hungary, on March 18, 1930. He completed his basic school education, served in the Hungarian military, and later earned an Associate's degree. 70 years ago, in 1956, George was involved in the Hungarian Revolution protesting the Hungarian government's subordination to the Soviet Union. After the revolution, he fled Hungary and made it to the US, thus earning a place in the 56ers. As a refugee, George worked very hard to earn his place in America, choosing Toledo, Ohio, as his home. Together with his friend and longtime partner, George Rodriguez, he built the Blue Line Remodeling and Roofing Company. George never fully retired, working well into his 90s. From his earliest days in Budapest, George’s life was shaped by the vibrant cultural tapestry and enduring spirit of Hungary. His roots in Hungary remained a source of great pride and personal identity throughout his life. George was a founding member of the Freedom Fighters Club, the Hungarian Club of Toledo, and the Lucas County Hungarians. Preserving the traditions, foods, and culture of his homeland were very important to him. A testament to courage and adaptability, George did achieve the American Dream, from refugee to successful business and community leader.
George is survived by daughter, Eva Ferencz; sister, Ilona Kosza; daughter-in-law, Melisa Ferencz; son-in-law, Joe Moore; grandchildren, Sydney (Ian), Sierra, Hailey (Dominic), Aaron (Brittney), and Stephen; great-grandchildren, Monica, Katie, Calli, Chloe, Aria, and Freddie III; many great great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Sue Miller; and his beloved german shepherds, Susie, Ruby, and Sophie. He was preceded in death by his wife, Julia, daughter, Suzanne Moore, son, Robert Ferencz Jr., and granddaughters, Michelle Halasz and Maggie Fox.
A visitation will be held at Freck Funeral Chapel, 1155 S. Wynn Rd. in Oregon, Ohio, on Thursday, July 16, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The Búcsúztatás service will be held at 7:00 p.m. that evening. A funeral mass will be held on Friday, July 17, 2026, at St. Stephen Catholic Church, 1880 Genesee Street, Toledo, Ohio, at 11:00 a.m., where the family will receive friends one hour prior to Mass. Burial will be held at St. Ignatius Cemetery, with the halotti tor/funeral reception afterward at Cousino's Steakhouse. George's German shepherds were his pride and joy; memorial contributions are appreciated to the family for their care.
