Ronald Joseph Heider born July 5, 1949, in Toledo, celebrated his 74th birthday with his children and grandchildren last Wednesday. He was the youngest of six children born to Elmer and Kathryn (Chisholm) Heider. Ron married his wife Peggy (Margaret) Logan on August 7, 1971, celebrating almost 53 years of marriage. A 1967 graduate of Waite High School Ron lettered in football as a defensive tackle and went on to receive his BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Toledo in 1971. Ron attended college on a full Toledo Edison scholarship and worked as a student engineer while in school. After graduation he continued working, as he always said, for three different companies from the same desk and office, retiring in 2008 from Bay Shore Generating Station.
Ron was an avid gun collector and enjoyed target shooting, reloading his own ammunition, and cleaning and repairing rifles and handguns. He also built model airplanes and cars, spending hours making all the paint and markings perfect. He enjoyed watching Indy Car and NASCAR racing and attended the Indianapolis 500 several times. Football was his only favorite sport following many teams Miami Dolphins, watching former classmate Curtis Johnson, Minnesota Vikings, Green Bay Packers, Pittsburg Steelers, and University of Michigan. After retirement he found joy cruising in the Caribbean during the cold months for respite from the cold and snow at home. He supported his children and grandson as an active band parent of the Clay High School Marching Band wearing his Waite High School letter sweater to the games sitting proudly among the Clay fans.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years Peggy; daughter Barbara (Nathan) Richmond of Big Rapids, MI; son David (Shannon) Heider of Oregon; grandchildren Baylon, Faith, and Hope Heider of Oregon and Donovan and Kaylee Richmond of Big Rapids, MI; sisters Joyce Schafer of Medina, Ohio and Carol (John) Wilson of Lake Township, Ohio; sister-in-law Ruth Heider of Bowling Green, and his Logan brothers-in-law Tom (Patti) of Walbridge, Rick (Jennifer) of Oregon, and Doug (Gina) of Columbus, Indiana; many nieces, nephews, and cousins; and beloved feline companions Missy and The Bat Cat. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Jack D., James E., and Robert F., sister-in-law Sue Jennison, and nephews Dr. Matt Heider and Ricky Wilson.
