Thomas James (Jim) Caldwell, 90, lived a life marked by love, service, and deep faith—one that spoke clearly without the need for many words. He is now in the presence of his Savior, reunited with his beloved bride, Carol.
Born and raised in East Toledo, Jim was a true “nickel,” proud of where he came from and the values it instilled in him. In 2016, he was inducted into the East Toledo Neighborhood House Distinguished Alumni Group. He didn’t speak often about what it meant to be a good man—he simply lived it, day after day, with humility and selflessness. As a young man, he joined the United States Army Reserves and served his country with pride for 8 years. And built a beautiful life alongside Carol spanning 68 years of marriage.
Jim was a kind and patient father to Tom (Mandy) and Nancy (Mike), and a very involved Grandpa to his five granddaughters and seven great grandchildren. He was a dedicated presence in the stands of many school bleachers and auditorium seats, faithfully showing up to support the people he loved.
At the center of Jim’s life was his faith in Jesus Christ, which shaped the way he served others. He wasn’t quick to speak, but when he did, his words were worth listening to. After a 38-year career at Libbey-Owens-Ford, he poured himself into being one of the best crossing guards Toledo Public Schools had seen and also remained a faithful volunteer at Mainstreet Church in Walbridge for over 50 years. Neither of those roles came without a sweet treat—whether ice cream or donuts, you could always find Jim near the desserts.
Despite his quiet nature, Jim connected with people in meaningful ways—through a love of sports (even replays), reading, taking walks at the mall, and simply showing up for others. His life was a reflection of steady devotion, gentle kindness, and unwavering love.
Jim joined Carol in Heaven exactly one year after her passing, and his family rejoices in the thought of them together again. While he may have been reserved in speech, his life told a bold and beautiful story—one of faith, family, and a legacy of love that will not be forgotten.
A memorial and celebration of his life will be held on Thursday, April 23, 2026 at 6:00 pm at Mainstreet Church (5465 Moline-Martin Rd. Walbridge, Ohio 43465). Prior to the service at the Church, the family invites you to a time of visitation and memory sharing from 4:00pm to 6:00pm. In lieu of flowers, a suggested memorial can be made toMainstreet Church in his honor.
