Elizabeth Hessling, age 75, of Oregon, Ohio passed away on Sunday, October 1, 2023 at Genoa Care Center. She was born on November 18, 1947 in Toledo, Ohio to Leslie A. and Mary Mahr. Elizabeth was a 1965 graduate of Harriett Whitney Vocational High School then married her husband, Joseph Hessling and worked as a secretary for various law offices in the Toledo area. She retired in 1985 after 15 years of service. Elizabeth was a member of St. Ignatius Catholic Church, the Oregon Senior Center and the East Toledo Senior Center. After retirement, she and her late husband and family lived near Lake Erie in Oak Harbor and enjoyed boating and fishing with her husband until his passing in 2005. She then moved to Oregon to be near her daughter and grandchildren. She enjoyed cooking, baking, flower gardening, traveling, going to festivals and craft shows. She baked hundreds of cookies, some being Hungarian and German at holidays to give to family and friends.
Elizabeth is survived by her daughter, Julie Cox; grandchildren, Caitlin Allen, Paul Cox III, and Elizabeth (Ethan) Friend; great-grandchildren, Joscelin, Charlotte, Godwin, and Gideon; her sister, Mary Ann (Tibor) Deri; many nieces, nephews, and former son-in-law, Paul Cox Jr. and sisters-in-law, Soledad Mahr and Carolyn Nusbaum. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Joseph E. Hessling; and brothers, Leslie Mahr Sr. and John Mahr. Her family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Adam Walter and the staff at his office and her many other doctors and nurses whose care she was under during her illness, especially the chemo nurses at Bay Park Hospital and the Hickman Center at Flower Hospital, staff at Genoa Care Center and Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
Family and friends may visit the Freck Funeral Chapel, 1155 S. Wynn Rd in Oregon on Friday, October 6, 2023 from 2-8:00 p.m. where recitation of the rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. at St. Ignatius Catholic Church where family will greet guests after 9:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to St. Ignatius Catholic Church or Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
