Mark Edwin Surprise

Mark Edwin Surprise went to be with his Lord on Friday, April 16, 2021. Mark was born on April 28, 1948, to Harold and Lettie (Benedict) Surprise, in Toledo, OH. The guideposts of Mark’s life were husband, father, patriot, and friend. Graduating from DeVilbiss High School he joined the Navy to pursue a 20-year career, retiring in 1986. A graduate of San Diego State University he taught, part-time, in the California College System until moving back to Ohio in 1991. He was employed as a Boiler Inspector for the State of Ohio. Baseball was a love of his and he enjoyed coaching his children. The Padres and Steelers were forever his favorite teams. He also loved bowling and bowled with “the guys” weeknights and with his wife on Saturdays.

Mark’s family was his proudest possession. He was his wife’s biggest fan when she sang with the Pride of Toledo Chorus. The couple traveled as often as they could searching for seashores, lighthouses, and casinos. Mark and Sue enjoyed playing quiz bowl with the Clay High School teachers and he was a great supporter of the Clay High Athletic Boosters.  

Mark was preceded in death by his parents and brother Kirk Surprise. He is survived by his former wife Kathaleen and current wife Susan, sons Richard (Anne) Surprise and Jason Surprise; daughters Shawna Surprise, Heidi (Jon) Adams and Adrienne (Jason) Pogrmich; sister Martha (Donard) Calavera; sisters-in-law Nancy Wheeler, Terri (Mark) Wheeler, and Gayle Surprise and many nieces and nephews. Grandpa Mark’s memory will be cherished by his greatest treasures, his grandchildren, Austin Surprise, Benjamin Pogrmich, and Abigaile Pogrmich.

Services are private, but will be livestreamed on the Freck Funeral Chapel's Facebook page. Arrangements were entrusted to Freck Funeral Chapel. Memorial contributions are appreciated to the Wounded Warriors Project or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
