            Father Gary M. Ferguson, age 69, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 11, 2015 at his home in Wauseon, Ohio surrounded by his loving family.  He was born on October 29, 1945 in Toledo to Donald and Alice (Hart) Ferguson.  A graduate of Good Shepherd Parish elementary school and Central Catholic high school, Father Gary attended St. Meinrad College and Mt. St. Mary’s of the West Seminary. He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Toledo on May 29, 1971 and celebrated his first Mass at Good Shepherd Catholic Church on May 31, 1971.  His assignments as associate pastor included St. Clement Parish-Toledo and Saint Patrick of Heatherdowns Parish-Toledo.  He served as pastor at Sacred Heart Parish-Montpelier, Saint Joseph Parish-Blakeslee, Saint Mary Parish-Bluffton, Saint John the Evangelist Parish-Stryker, Saint Peter Parish-Archbold and Our Lady of Mercy Parish-Fayette.

 

Father Gary helped guide the construction of St. Peter’s Activity Center project.  He was then active in shepherding the AA groups that met there twice a week. He was well known for his love for his Native American Heritage and his extensive knowledge of the history of the Catholic Church.  Father will long be remembered for his sense of humor and easy going personality.

 

He is survived by his loving sisters, Kathy Ferguson (Mike) McGinnis and Cyndie (Kevin) Lombardo.  Also left to cherish his memory are niece, Deana Gilbert; nephew, Gary (Drew) McGinnis; great-nieces, Emma and Sarah Gilbert; and his great-nephew, Andrew McGinnis who is on the way. He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Alice Ferguson; and nephew, Donald A. Thielen.

 

The Reception of the Body will be at 2 p.m. with visitation following until 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 15, 2015 at Our Lady, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral, 2561 Collingwood Blvd. in Toledo where Vespers will be held at 7 p.m.  Additional visitation will take place after 9 a.m. on Friday with the Mass of Christian burial to be celebrated at 11 a.m.  Burial will be held at Restlawn Memorial Park.  Memorial contributions may be made in Fr. Gary’s name to A.S.P.C.A., St. Meinrad College or the Diocese of Toledo.
